Rain!

Much needed

long awaited

Rain!

heart pounding

hard flooding

Rain!

 

pushing up

bright green sprouts

never before seen

by me

 

laughing

dancing

waving their pretty faces

I laughed too

 

they had been lying in wait

for the perfect moment

to spring from the earth

all over my rocky yard

Daily Breath - January 6, 2022

 

Sometime in August last year

after months of no rain

after days and days of 100 degree heat

our homeowner’s association

sent out a lady in a golf cart

to take pictures of our front yards.

 

Pretty soon we started receiving

letters that informed us

if we didn’t get rid of our “weeds”

in two weeks

they would fine us $200 each.

 

There was great consternation

up and down the street

but ultimately

faced with no negotiation

we hired masked assassins

who sprayed our weeds away

until there was nothing left

but our salt and pepper rocks

basking in the unrelenting sun
