Ice Skating!

The weather was good again

so we had a nice walk

it was good to be out and about

a little breezy but warmish.

Later in the day there was Ice Skating!  It was broadcast before the opening Olympic ceremonies.  My children and I love ice skating; we watched it religiously back in the day. We knew all the skaters.  But this was the first time in a long time I got to watch a group of ladies competing, and a replay of Nathan Chen, Great Skater of the  USA! So they say.  Lots of ice skating to come!  Hurray!!

The Wind Day Two

Second day of ferocious wind

February has definitely come in

like a flying dervish

I am disappointed because February is my month

And I’m a pacifist

my birthday is February 27

It’ll be here before you know it

The Writer’s Group met today on Zoom; it meets at 10 am every first Wednesday of every month. There is a poem prompt (we can use it or not as we wish) and then we write for 40 minutes.

Last month I tried to write a metaphor where none existed.  I decided after that disappointing writing experience that you can’t force a metaphor; a metaphor will either want to be or not! So this time I wrote from one of the prompts my sad early childhood experience about my mother dying.  But then I abruptly diverged and ran off the page talking about falling, how you shouldn’t fall down because you can hurt yourself! And that was because the title of the poem reminded me of the children’s nursery rhyme: “Ring around a rosy, pocket full of posy, ashes, ashes, all fall down.” This rhyme was popular when I was a child and we always laughed and fell down; it was a great game.

Little did I know that this nursery rhyme came from the great plague of long ago. It describes the visual manifestation of the plague (rosy) and then falling down dead. A horrible death, like our current plague. Many died. Fortunately, when I fell down recently, all I got was a cracked rib: very painful but not deadly.

I think I have to work harder at writing something cohesive: one subject at a time!

the wind day one

weather report

very very windy

breaking tree branches

blowing things about in the yard

and no rain

the weather people on tv seem intent on mentioning this

every day

no rain

it turns out the heavy rain we had earlier

wasn’t enough

we are still in a drought

I am really sorry about this

and all the terrible “unprecedented” weather everywhere:

no rain

too much rain

flooding

hurricanes

tornadoes

fires

earthquakes

what can i do?
