About to blossom
Into the next
Me
A realm of
Possibilities
Beckoning
I pray my children
Will find their way
In a whirling world
Of who knows what’s next
Missteps could be
Deadly
I will show up
I will even wear a mask
When asked
I will offer myself

My true self

As it is revealed

Megan left today
It was planned
At least for the past month or so
But a kind of hard parting
She took everything that would fit
In her car
And drove to Vicki’s
In San Mateo County
Mark and I pulled down the curtains
In the sun porch
That were blocking the view
On three sides
Now we can see
A yard full of brilliant green
Foliage
A few brown
Tree trunks
And magical sunshine!
I hope it works for Megan
She has been healing
But it’s a long journey
To reliable health
At least she won’t have to spend
Another hot summer
On the sun porch
With her face buried
In the flow of frigid air
From the air conditioner
We all expect
extreme weather
but some of us can take it
and some cannot

Church at 10:30 a.m.
Rather than 9:00 a.m.
It was communion day
For both services
We sang an anthem
Which I had practiced quite a bit
It was conducted by Emma
A cappella and a little fast for me
But I survived
Then Mark went to his car
And got the cupcakes
He had bought for Carmen
Emma’s and Juan’s daughter
Who was very taken with Mark
Because they have a birthday
On the same day: April 2
Carmen at one point asked her mother:
“Does that mean he is 9 too?”
That was sweetly heartwarming
Mark and Carmen have bonded quite remarkably
Carmen gave Mark a card she made
And a beautiful red flower
And Mark has made a beautiful birthday card
For her
On his computer
Featuring famous people throughout history
Who were born on
April 2.
LATER
We had barely gotten home
When we turned on the TV
And it was Live From the Met!
“Fire Shut Up in My Bones”
A biblical quote from Jeremiah
Bette, Mark’s mom, had mentioned it
The prior evening during the Zoom meeting
I think she liked it
But she didn’t finish watching it
She didn’t say why
It was a difficult subject
But beautifully handled
Effectively sung and acted
Fantastic choreography
Brilliantly conducted by Yannick!
And it had a very touching ending
The main importance of this production is
The fact that
It is the first opera composed by an
African-American
To be performed
At the Met
And I do believe
It has an All-Black cast
Onward and Upward!
