SHORT BYTE (1990)
I suffered because
I never got to
Suffer
I think I am coming out of suffering
Except for external events
My wounded child may be healing
My personal angst may be
Coming to an end
I went with Mark to the final rehearsal/
Performance of the SFCCO
I did box office and monitored
The lobby
With the help of Peggy and Jerry
Who were with the Lakeview Church
They were checking people’s vaccinations
And making sure they had masks on
I was across from them
At a smaller table
With a small money box Peggy found for me
Because I didn’t bring one
We gathered up some 20-dollar bills
And a few fives
Because I didn’t bring any money
The truth is
I wasn’t totally committed to doing
Box office
So my brain didn’t kick in
To tell me I should bring
Those things
BUT I acquiesced
Especially when Mark said
He would do box office with me
Not that he doesn’t have enough to do
Being the conductor and composer and
General go-to producer
But he is wonderful at the door
Welcoming audience members
And getting their money
With a smile and a friendly word
I was happy
We took in $400
With an audience of
17 or so
Including Ken Bullock
A long time friend
and reviewer
Who it turns out
Loves Mark’s music
And loved his new piece

Most of all!
