In 1987 while I was listening to Gustav Mahler’s
3rd Symphony, 4th Movement, and looking at the
record jacket, I saw these words:
“Deeper still than grief is joy”
a translation of words Nietsche wrote in his “Thus Spake Zarathustra” and borrowed by Mahler for his symphony.
I instantly embraced those words; they resonated deep in me, and I knew the truth of them. They are still, 35 years later, a solace and an affirmation and a strength.
