The other day I was reading a paper I wrote in Art Engelbrecht’s English 1 class at Solano Community College, 19 December 2015 (a critical year!!). I am forever indebted to Art for suggesting I not write a paper on greed and consumerism featuring Wal-Mart, but instead he allowed me to pose the following question:
“How can spiritual belief systems evoke positive moral and ethical values in a materialistic, consumption-driven world?”
The title of my paper was “Weaving the Web of Life,” and included my long-held belief that we all connected, we are all one! Consequently, I ended my lengthy, thoroughly-researched paper by evoking a great Native American (actually a Great American!):
“All things are connected like the blood that unites us. We did not weave the web of life. We are merely a strand in it. Whatever we do to the web we do to ourselves.”
…..Chief Seattle, the Great Native American
